Machine translation for sign languages is a hot topic. Last week, my most recent article was published in Springer's Universal Access in the Information Society.
The article describes how machine translation from signed to spoken languages is performed, what is required, and what are open challenges in the domain (spoiler: there are plenty). Interestingly especially for computer and data scientists, it also touches on some sign language linguistics in section 2.
