Workshop on Local Generative AI for Education in Tanzania
24 April 2026
IDLab-AIRO gave a workshop at Mzumbe University in April 2026 on using local generative AI models for education in Tanzanian contexts. This coincided with the inauguration of the CAIRI research centre. Read more here.
I was proud to contribute to the preparation of this workshop and was excited to give it to the highly motivated participants. I care deeply about open science, sharing knowledge, and improving education on local and global scales. Since this workshop was aimed at using generative AI for educational purposes, I hope that it can help make education more accessible in Tanzania (in the context of the VLIR-UOS projects “AI4STEM: AI-driven Inclusive STEM Learning for Tanzania”, and “The Makings of a Global Citizen: Leveraging Generative AI for English Mastery in Tanzanian Primary Schools”).
This was my second visit to the beautiful country of Tanzania, and it was nice to return to Morogoro and Mzumbe University in particular. Thank you to my colleague Edger Rutatola for the organisation and travel arrangements, to prof. Tony Belpaeme for inviting me, and to prof. Francis wyffels for allowing me to prepare and travel for this workshop.
